eating species such as American white pelican (Pelecanus erythrorhynchos), belted
kingfisher and double-crested cormorant (Phalacrocorax auritus); and is the basis of
survival of many upland species such as raccoon and mink (Mustela vison).
7.34 Permanent Emergent Marshes
Goals:
• To maintain, enhance and restore permanent marshes for the benefit of various species of
wildlife dependent upon permanent water environments.
Objectives:
• To maintain and enhance approximately 3 acres of permanent marsh.
• To restore and create approximately 19 acres of new permanent marsh.
• To develop a monitoring program, to be implemented by a competent biologist over a 5
year period, to insure that the above objectives are met. Specifically, the monitoring
program will document that the water level management is providing proper inundation
of the mitigation site; that the site has developed the targeted plant communities,
including associated invertebrates; and that the site supports migratory waterfowl,
shorebirds, and other wildlife.
Permanent marshes at the Buckeye Ranch are scarce, being largely restricted to the 2.62
acres of the beaver pond area. Typical permanent marsh plants consist of emergents such
as hardstem bulrush, cattail, and smartweed.
Restoration and Management
Permanent marshes will be created and enhanced at several locations at Buckeye Ranch.
Buckeye Ranch Resource Plan (November, 1993)
196
