8.5 Easy Playability
It is important that the course be relatively easy to play (but still challenging for highly
skilled golfers). Fairways that cross natural obstacles can result in golfers hitting balls into
sensitive habitats. These natural obstacles are often features that were left with good
intentions -- such as an old heritage tree left in place for its real or perceived environmental
value. Unfortunately, a possible negative outcome of planning for single-tree preservation
is that more damage can be done to adjoining habitats than the benefits accrued by leaving
the heritage tree intact. Making the course playable need not restrict challenge to the more
experienced golfer.
At Buckeye Ranch, the wide open, sweeping nature of the golfing landscape suggests that
the course will be very playable.
8.6 Fairways That Follow or Create Ball-Constricting Contours
In order to minimize the possibility of balls of going into sensitive habitats, it is often
important that fairway contours not roll the ball out of play. Good design and construction
seeks this characteristic. In critical areas, contours that slope up into adjoining sensitive
areas are preferred to those that slope down into them. Correctly contoured fairways and
short rough in landing areas will therefore help to restrict ball movement away from
sensitive habitat areas.
The grading plan for the Buckeye Ranch Golf Course will incorporate these features into
the design.
Buckeye Ranch Resource Plan (November, 1993)
219
