BUCKEYE RANCH ( 4-1-92 ) 14
. Before any test excavations are performed an attempt should
Cilli be made to avoid potentially significant cultural resources and
Lplacing fill over some deposits should be considered since it has
een applied elsewhere and worked well .
6 . Any consulting archaeologists hired to define the specific
limits of the sites should have at least one individual on staff
that has had considerable experience in conducting soil chemistry
C116 analysis of archaeological sites . A qualified consultant could
be hired to perform the required tests . This or another
individual should also have considerable experience in using
truck mounted augers to rapidly check depth and soil conditions
on site . The qualifications of these individuals should be
verified and references should be checked since there are many
individuals who indicate they know something about soil chemistry
but in fact have little or no practical experience .
7 . all postulated "house floors" ( house pits ) that are not on a
site with excavatable deposit or within a few meters should be
C117 tested with an auger or trowel to see if fire hearths ,
phosphates , carbonates or other materials are present to confirm
that they are archaeological features and not a depression of
unknown origin.
S . The collections at the University of California , Berkeley and
C118 the Tracy School district should be studied and analyzed before
any additional archaeological excavations take place . The
potential for collections from the Tracy Lake area in the
possession of local landowners is also possible and should be
considered .
9 Agreements concerning the disposition of any artifacts should
C119 be established before any archaeological surface collection or
Le.Ycavation occur .
10 . If the Buckeye Ranch Subdivision is allowed to proceed it
would be desirable to have a walk through inspection of areas in
C120which earth moving will occur by representatives of the Native
American Community and archaeologists not affiliated with the
project as a good will gesture to -void any problems in the
future .
J11-9
