historically oak/buckeye savanna. As per CEQA guidelines, more specificity from the
commenter is required.
Cl 11: The EIR authors concur with this statement.
C 112: The Central California Information Center has reviewed the site records submitted with the Phase
I report. On April 4, 1992, the Central California Information Center assigned the official
trinomial numbers to every site record submitted by the DEIR archaeologists.
Cl 13: Refer to response A22.
C 114: The EIR authors concur that professional archaeologists should be retained to perform future
work at the project site, however, experience does not have to be limited to Central California
as recommended by the commenter.
C 115: The purpose of testing is to determine potentially significant resources. The use of fill is
governed by Appendix K of CEQA.
C 116: The use of truck-mounted augers is a potentially destructive method for determining site location
and depth, especially where there is evidence of burials present. Soil testing may be useful in
determining the interrelationship of areas within a site, but in itself has too many flaws to be used
as a single method. Soil testing should be combined with other testing methods. The lead
archaeologist conducting the field research should be certified by the Society of Professional
Archaeologists. Refer to response C83.
Cl 17: As the commenter is aware, all postulated "house floors" by definition must be on excavatable
deposits. Thus, all postulated house floors should be mapped and a representative sample tested.
C 118: This action was recommended in the DEIR; please refer to page 4.9-12.
C 119: The EIR authors concur with this statement.
C 120: The EIR authors concur that a walk-through inspection with members of the Native American
community should occur, but with the archaeologists performing the Phase Il study.
C 121: Although the equestrian trail through Brovelli Woods has been used occasionally over the past
decades the relatively heavy use by residents and guests, especially during the spring/summer
months, could disrupt the nesting period of the Swainson's hawk.
C 122: The further the protective fence can be installed outside the drip line the better. This would be
more beneficial for the health of the tree.
C 123-
C 124: We concur that a dead limb over a house, parking lot, etc., should be removed. However, the
pruning should be restricted only to the development area. It is essential that the natural
environment be maintained in the preserve to function as a viable habitat.
C 125-
III-174
