From the cultural point of view something as simple as <br /> the present practice employed by many of drying clothing at night may have to be-altered <br /> in the solar future because of electric storage capacity and other energy considerations. <br /> Also, a transition to DC powered appliances will be difficult based upon present high <br /> prices of those type of appliances. Costs can be driven by use and demand, but <br /> expanding use will be phased in over time. <br /> "Transitional technologies" more sustainable than today's, but not totally. <br /> sustainable, must be employed. Identifying these so we can generally progress toward <br /> sustainability is critical. Also, recognition of the transitional_technologies as being "less <br /> than sustainable" will help keep the focus on our ultimate goal of sustainability. These <br /> transitional technologies must be abandoned as more sustainable alternatives become <br /> available. <br /> Sustainability is an enormous issue, and one that cannot yet be totally <br /> encompassed in one purchase or project. Until we develop solar based and other <br /> alternatives to our cars, trucks, ships and planes, we will <br /> not reach sustainability. Even if we use a solar panel for water heating, for example, but <br /> it is delivered to us in an oil powered vehicle, then we have'not arrived at total <br /> sustainability. We must use the technologies now available and continue to support <br /> research and development to provide sustainable alternatives.for the.future. <br /> New York Audubon accepts that total sustainability will be achieved in <br /> increments. Reaching a sustainable level must be our goal, but this can not be <br /> accomplished overnight. However, we cannot 'wish" ourselves there. We must plan, <br /> build and rebuild ourselves to sustainability. <br /> The following Principles of Sustainable Resource Management are designed to <br /> serve as a guide to a more comprehensive approach to.land use at the individual, local <br /> and community level.
