Ms. Kerry Sullivan
December 22, 1992
Page 2
Page 7 - Plant Communities
"The forest contains trees in many age categories, with some of the older
Dos specimens averaging well above 100 years. The later estimates were
obtained from annular ring counts from stumps that have been pulled out
and deposited in piles near the forest edge."
These stumps are being stored for future placement in the lakes as fish habitat.
Page 10
"It is this extensive grape vine growth with its "Tarzan swing" vines that
imparts a jungle-like appearance to this classic remnant of valley riparian
Dos woodland. Only the preserved mature riparian woodland segments of
Caswell State Park in southern San Joaquin County equal that present
along the Mokelumne River in Brovelli Woods."
The Nature Conservacy's Consumnes River Preserve contains better habitat. Their
property continues to flood naturally.
In addition, this type of vegetation exists along the Mokelumne River from Woodbridge
to the Delta and above Lodi to Comanche Reservoir.
Page 14
"One other criteria for such sites in California is that they receive little or
no human disturbance during the nesting period. Several Swainson's
D47 hawks were regularly seen on the project site during April, and on May 7
the first nest was sighted. It was situated near the top of a tall Fremont
cottonwood in Brovelli Woods at the eastern end of the proposed 13th
fairway and the Mokelumne River..."
According to Steve Laymen, Swainson's hawks nest in a CalTrans Corporation Yard in
Yuba City, a facility where trucks are continuously moving in and out.
In addition, Dave Fisher has shown to you photos of a Swainson's hawk nest above a
golf tee at Woodbridge Country Club adjacent to Lower Sacramento Road.
We believe these observations prove that the daily presence of people will cause nest
sitting in less disturbed areas; i.e., a tree or two removed from a fairway.
vi-76
