Joyce N. Mercer (a.k.a. Sullivan;
1819 Edgewood Drive
Lodi, CA 95240
(209) 369-6724
January 25, 1993
San Joaquin County
Community Development Department
c/o Kerry Sullivan, Senior Planner
1810 E. Hazelton Avenue
Stockton, CA 95205-6232
SUBJECT: Comments on the environmental review of the proposed
Buckeye Ranch residential development & golf course.
If ever there was property that should never be developed
in San Joaquin County it ' s the Brovelli Woods area. On January
10, 1993 I toured the property for the proposed Buckeye Ranch
residential development and 18-hole golf course. During the
morning and early af'uernoon I was overwhelmed by what I observed.
I was aware that this area is part of the Pacific Flyway
and a migratory route for animal life but I was unprepared for
the abundance of waterfowl, birds, and other animal varieties
existing there. The habitat was crucial to their presence. D119
Im#ediately upon arrival flocks of Canadian Geese flew
overhead and then flocks of Whooping Crane. Hundreds of Redwinged
blackbirds landed on the buckeye savanah. In the 33 years I 've
lived in the county I 've never seen so many Redwinged Blackbirds
concentrated in one place. A two-pronged deer sauntered under
the oak forrest canopy and several hawks soared above.
Common sense would tell any reasonable person observing
Brovelli Woods property that it should be retained in its
natural state and never developed. Conservation of this
property as a preserve for plant and animal life which is rapid-
ly disappeaOing in the region is the logical thing to do.
Development of a private golf course for the priviledged
few is illogical and a tragic choice in my view. Nothing quite
like Brovelli Woods exists anymore in our county. It ' s truly
unique.
I was impressed by the lack of noise pollution (man made) .
The Woodbridge Regional Park, which is adjacent to a private
golf course where a lot of noise pollution emmanates from into
the forrested park, is an example of what will happen to the
quiet at Brovelli Woods if the Buckeye Ranch Subdivision is
VI-107
