KIM
ON
Coca-Cola Enterprises - West
USTEC Job No.90054.03
Response: USTEC submitted the signed copies of the chain of custody documents to Mr.Steve
Schneider of the San Joaquin County Public Health Services.
Comment 2) Diesel has been found in both soil and groundwater as well as
cyanide at 73 ppm in the outside stockpiled soil. The source of
w- these two contaminates is unspecified at this point, Please provide
a history of the site and of the 1,000-gallon UST as this might
reveal the information that we are currently lacking. Additionally,
j please re-sample the outside stockpile for cyanide to support or
rebuke the previous sampling results.
Response: TPH concentrations quantified against a diesel standard are reported by the
laboratory as "high boiling point hydrocarbons" and usually referred to as diesel. However,
i
these concentrations may actually represent the heavier components of gasoline since there is
an overlap in the chromatograms of hydrocarbons in the CB to C1z range. The verification
samples collected from the diesel UST excavation were below analytical detection limits which
suggests that the source of the contamination is probably not from the diesel UST excavation.
The diesel concentrations that were initially found to be present in the soil and groundwater at
! -- the site have ah but disappeared since the initial investigation,
A possible source of the diesel contamination may have been from the concrete company that
3 site. During the well completion activities, diesel was used
completed t1e wells at the Stockton
f w,
on the inside of the cement truck and in the delivery trough as a lubricant. Mr.Steve Schneider
I of the Sari Joaquin Public Health Services and the USTEC hydrogeologist identified the problem
during the drilling activities and made the concrete company stop using the diesel fuel. Diesel
r constituents have not been detected in groundwater samples from the last three quarterly
monitoring periods with the exception of groundwater monitoring well MW-2.
i
USTEC collected additional composite soil samples on March 7, 1991. The analytical chemistry
test results for cyanide indicated a reactive cyanide concentration of 1.7 ppm. This concentration
poses no significant problem and after discussion with Mr. Steve Schneider,no further action
was recommended concerning the cyanide issue. The results of the sampling were reported in
a letter to the San Joaquin Public Health Services dated April 4, 1991 (Appendix B).
_ 7
