• 4.0 HEALTH HAZARD INFORMATION
Chemical hazard information is listed below for potentially hazardous chemicals
previously detected during the Preliminary Environmental Site Assessment Report (Geological
` Technics, Inc, 1995) and to which employees may be exposed at the work sites This hazard
information includes the potentially hazardous chemicals used by the employees while
performing sampling activities, and those identified during previously conducted investigations
at the Roberts Property Potential physical and biological hazards are discussed in this section
4.1 Chemical Hazards
Crude oil is the hazardous material known to exist at the sampling site Crude oil
is composed of numerous organic chemicals, with up to 5% toluene, 5% xylene, and 2%
benzene Chemical and physical properties for some of these constituents are provided in
. Appendix C Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDSs) for crude oil are also provided in Appendix
C
Discussion of the toxicity of the individual chemicals of concern is provided on
their MSDSs In the reality of this project, exposure to individual chemicals cannot be predicted
Therefore, the following discussion focuses on the group of chemicals of concern
The chemicals of concern vary in vapor pressure, but all are considered volatile
and capable of presenting an inhalation hazard Volatilization could occur when soil cuttings are
brought up and exposed to the atmosphere The acute toxicity of these chemicals, alone or
synergistically, is a function of their effect on the central nervous system Overexposure
symptoms include headache, fatigue, lightheadedness, giddiness, and agitation
Symptoms of chronic exposure include liver and kidney damage, but the potential
for chronic exposure does not exist in the current scope of work
4-1
