FIRE OR HAZARDOUS CHEMICAL SPILL <br />NOTIFICATION <br />1. Office staff will activate the fire alarm for a drill. In an actual fire or chemical spill, the alarm <br />should be activated by any person who observes evidence of afire or chemical spill. <br />EVACUATION <br />2. Students exit class in single file. <br />3. Teacher leaves class last with classroom emergency response bucket, class roster, and other pertinent <br />information. <br />4. All doors are left closed and unlocked. <br />ASSEMBLY <br />5. Students line up by class at their designated (or alternate) fire drill location. <br />6. If the fire or spill occurs after school, during lunch/ break/recess, or passing period, students will <br />report to their designated location. [Note: the definition of "designated location" <br />may differ by site. If no other guidance has been provided, the student should report to the outdoor <br />assigned location of the teacher of their prior class.] <br />7. Teachers check the roll to make sure all students are accounted for. <br />8. Teachers stand in the front of the class line and signal with red, yellow, or green card. <br />• Green card signaling attendance taken, all accounted for. No immediate help needed <br />• Yellow card signaling attendance taken, student(s) unaccounted for. No immediate help needed <br />• Red card signaling need for immediate emergency assistance (immediate action required to <br />address threats to human life, health, safety or property). <br />EVAL UA TION <br />9. Support staff (principal, secretaries, librarian, custodian, etc.) will respond to red cards and check the <br />buildings for damage as designated on the site Crisis Communication Checklist. <br />10. Do not return to class until the clear bell or message from the principal indicates that the building is <br />safe. <br />PRACTICE & PREPARATION <br />• Review the fire exit routes with your class. See page on annual preparation/planning for proper use <br />of emergency response bucket. Check to ensure emergency paperwork is updated. <br />• Inform students that if they are in some portion of the building/school other than their classroom, <br />RESPONSE TO SPILLS OF LIQUIDS, GASES, OR SOLIDS <br />• If safe to do so, take any immediate measures to control or stop any release. Remove sources of igniti <br />ventilate the area of release, isolate the area, and report the release to the office.
