Preparation
• Inspect the facility for items that could fall, spill, break or move during an earthquake. Fasten
shelves securely to walls and place large or heavy objects on lower shelves.
• Brace overhead light fixtures.
• Repair defective electrical wiring and leaky gas connections. (These are potential fire risks)
• Repair any deep cracks in ceilings or foundations. (Get professional advice if there are signs
of structural defects)
• Review processes for handling and storing hazardous material/waste. (Store incompatible
chemicals separately)
➢ Store weed killers, pesticides, and flammable products securely in closed cabinets with
latches and on bottom shelves
Identify Safe Places to Shelter Indoors and Outdoors
• Identify areas within the facility, away from exterior walls and windows, where associates and
customers can gather.
• When outdoors, select an area away from buildings, trees, telephone and electrical lines,
overpasses, or elevated expressways.
• Know when to call 911, police, or fire department and which radio station to tune to for
emergency information.
• Know how and when to turn off gas, electricity, and water.
• Although smaller than the main shock, aftershocks cause additional damage and may bring
weakened structures down. Aftershocks can occur in the first hours, days, weeks, or even
months after the quake. Each time an aftershock is felt; associates should drop, cover and
hold -on.
During an Event
Indoors
• Relocate to a safe area inside the building, drop to the floor and cover your head. It is very
dangerous to leave a building during an earthquake because objects can fall. Many fatalities
occur when people run outside of buildings, only to be killed by falling objects from collapsing
walls. Stay away from windows.
• Stay indoors until the shaking stops and you are certain that it is safe to exit the building.
• Each time an aftershock is felt associates and customers should drop and cover their head to
protect against falling debris.
Announcement
"Due to an earthquake, Associates and customers must take cover immediately. Get down on the
floor and protect your head. (REPEA7)
Outdoors
• Find a clear spot away from buildings, trees, streetlights, power lines or anything that could
fall from above.
33
