HAZARDOUS CHEMICAL SPILL <br /> EMERGENCY RESPONSE PROCEDURES <br /> ATTACHMENT A <br /> 1. Immediately alert area occupants, your supervisor and evacuate the area if <br /> necessary. Any type of chemical cloud or overpowering smell are an indication <br /> the area should be immediately evacuated. Broadcast the evacuation notice over <br /> the company intercom system and proceed to the designated evacuation area. If <br /> evacuation is not necessary, cordoned off affected area. <br /> 2. Attend to any people who may be contaminated. Contaminated clothing must be <br /> removed immediately and the skin, eyes and all effected areas flushed with <br /> copious amounts of water. <br /> 3. If a volatile or flammable material is spilled, immediately warn everyone, control <br /> sources of ignition and ventilate the area. <br /> 4. Identify the chemical or product spilled and refer to material safety data sheet <br /> (MSDS) for proper clean up procedure and personal protection. Raw material <br /> MSDS are kept in the lab and finished product MSDS are kept in the office. <br /> In addition to the MSDS, hazardous materials can be identified by the warning <br /> labels on container located next to the product label. Warning labels are diamond <br /> shaped and color coded for type of hazard, e.g., red for flammable, yellow for <br /> oxidizer, black for corrosive. <br /> 5. If the spill occurs in the building, Value Products has a series of floor drains to <br /> prevent the spill from exiting the building. If the spill occurs outside the building, <br /> protect storm drains with spill socks, absorbent pads or rubber pad over drain. <br /> Spill containment kits and salvage drums are located in various areas throughout <br /> the building. <br /> 6. For hazardous powder spills, scoop up all usable powder and put it into a new five <br /> gallon plastic pail or fiber drum. Label the container with product name and all <br /> pertinent hazardous information. Put the remaining unusable powder in a new five <br /> gallon plastic pail, or fiber drum, and label the container as hazardous waste. <br /> Label to include product name and all pertinent hazardous information. <br /> Hazardous waste must be properly disposed of within 90 days according to all <br /> local and state guidelines. <br /> 7. For hazardous liquid spills, recover any useable material and put into a new five <br /> five gallon pail or suitable container. Label the container with product name and <br /> all pertinent hazardous information. Put the remaining unusable liquid in a new <br /> five gallon pail or suitable container and label as hazardous waste. Label to <br /> include product name and all pertinent hazardous information.
