Additional force will be reg
quired to lock the joint. The additional
force can be provided by using a strop
(BONDING OPERATION block of wood and a hammer.
1 Using a clean paint brush, apply a
thin, uniform coat of adhesive—first to
the bell and then to the spigot bonding
surface (see Fig. 1.1).
NOTE: Coat the entire tapered area
of both surfaces, removing all brush
bristles.
3 Align and lock the joint (see Fig.
1.2).
For 8"-24" diameter pipe, a Smitlfl
Fibercast hydraulic come -along or manuL
at come -along is recommended. Connect
come-alongs to pipe and pull joint togeth
er slowly while firmly hammering on the'
side of the joint with a rubber mallet or 5
Ib. dead blow hammer. Be careful not to
delaminate the pipe. Continue until no fur-
ther movement is seen at the joint. Note:
When using a hydraulic come -along, refer
to Manual No. F6000, F6618, or F6619
for come -along pressures. A Smith
Fibercast strap clamp kit is also available
for fitting to pipe joints.
LONG RUNS (DITCH PIPING) MUST BE
SUPPORTED AT THE JOINT SECTION
AT ALL TIMES, UNTIL FULLY CURED.
3 Joint Lock Up: Wipe off a small
area of adhesive at the edge of the bell
and use a pen to make a reference
mark. Drive joint together until the refer-
ence mark is no longer moving,.a_nd a
positive lock up has been achieved.
4 Pipe or sub -assemblies can be
moved before the joints are cured as
long as care is taken not to disturb the
lock of the joint. Bending or excessive
movement is not advised. Refer to the
section, ADHESIVE CURE, for time to
handle and pressurize.
ADHESIVE CURE
1 Cure time depends on ambient tem-
perature. External heat is recommend-
ed to assure full adhesive cure when
ambient temperature is below 7013F.
Temperature
(b F)
Time
(Hours)
50
18
E0
12
70
6
so
4
90
2
110
t
Smith Fibercast: Refer to Smith
Fibercast Bulletin No. F6640 or Manual
No. F6000 for specific heat assist in-
structions.
3 When using heat assist, do not han-
dle or pressurize pipe sections until the
adhesive (glue) line has returned to am-
bient temperature.
DHESIVE DISPOSAL: Once the adhesive and
ardener have been mixed and reacted, nothing
im be extracted, and it is classified as non-haz-
dous material. Dispose of in a normal manner as
her solid wastes. Excess adhesive and hardener
In be mixed, allowed to react, and disposed of as
mve. If -extra iars of adhesive or hardener have
:cumulated without the other component to mix
id react, contact your Smith Fibercast regional
anager.
