0 0
For over 30 years the lining industry has assessed bare steel tanks. Field performance and experience has
determined that tanks meeting the perforation criteria of section A10.4 of Chapter A of this standard are
structurally sound tanks and can continue to be structurally sound tanks in future.
Tank lining can prevent releases due to external or internal corrosion. Chapter A specifies a minimum
lining thickness of 100 mils and a nominal thickness of 125 mils. A 125 mil lining provides additional
structural strength to the tank walls by forming a composite tank. A 125 mil thick lining is required to
extend the useful life of the tank when upgrading is to be accomplished by interior lining. A 125 mil
lining can provide a solid structural barrier over future holes which may form due to external corrosion in
the outer steel tank wall.
The operational life of bare steel tanks that are assessed and lined in accordance with Chapter A of this
standard may be extended at least 10 years without the addition of cathodic protection.
5
