MATER I--S-A-F-E T Y D A T A S H E 0
--------------------------7------------
Dow Chemical U.S.A. Midland, MI 48674 Emergency Phone: 517-636-4400
Product Code: 19217 Page: 2
PRODUCT NAME: D.E.N. (R) 438 EPDXY NOVOLAC
Effective Date: 03/12/87 Date Printed: 06/30/87 MSDS:000216
3. FIRE AND EXPLOSION HAZARD DATA: (CONTINUED)
FIRE AND EXPLOSION HAZARDS: None known.
FIRE -FIGHTING EQUIPMENT: Wear positive pressure, self-contained
breathing apparatus.
4. REACTIVITY DATA:
STABILITY: (CONDITIONS TO AVOID) Excessive heating over long
periods of time degrades the resin, increases viscosity and
epoxide equivalent weight.
INCOMPATIBILITY: (SPECIFIC MATERIALS TO AVOID) Acids, bases,
and amines.
HAZARDOUS DECOMPOSITION PRODUCTS: The by-products expected in
:= incomplete pyrolysis or combustion of epoxy resins are
mainly phenolics, carbon monoxide and water. The thermal
decomposition products of epoxy resins therefore should be
treated as potentially hazardous substances, and appropriate
Precautions should be taken.
HAZARDOUS POLYMERIZATION: Unlikely to occur by itself, but masses
of more than 1 pound of product plus an aliphatic amine will
cause irreversible polymerization with considerable heat
buildup.
5. ENVIRONMENTAL AND DISPOSAL INFORMATION:
ACTION TO TAKE FOR SPILLS: Soak up in absorbent material such
as sand and collect in suitable containers. Residual resin
may be removed using steam or hot soapy water. `Use of
methylene chloride or other solvents in cleanup poses a
distinct hazard and therefore should be avoided. Keep
spark producing equipment away. For large spills, evacuate
upwind of spills and contain with dike.
DISPOSAL METHOD: Resins can be disposed of through burning in
an adequate incinerator, or burying in a landfill, in accordance
(Continued on Page 3)
(R) Indicates a trademark -of The Doi Chemical Company
-2-
