MSDS No. 250 2060 0300-1 Date: 06/26/87 Page 3 of 3
V HEALTH HAZARD DATA
...CgAti nued
Reported Human Effects:
Hercules Incorporated has not received any reports of adverse effects from workers handling this
product. Repeat insult human patch tests with several grades of Pulpex polyolefin pulp have resulted
in neither skin irritation nor sensitization.
Reported Animal Effects:
PULPEX E—D Series polyolefin pulps are polyethylene pulps treated with a non—hazardous surfactant.
Many experiments have demonstrated that polyethylene (PE) can be categorized as practically
non—toxic. Its acute oral LD50 for rats is greater than 8,000 mg/kg body weight. Subchronic
studies in which rats were fed concentrations of up to 5.0% PE for 90 days resulted in no adverse
effects. Implantation of PE into the muscle of rabbits for up to 12 weeks resulted in no
histopathologic effects and a rating for PE of "nontoxic" and "noncytotoxic". In vitro studies with
either rat peritoneal or alveolar macrophages have not caused cytotoxicity nor cell death.
Acute inhalation studies on rats exposed to fibers of PULPEX E polyethylene pulp (without surfactant
treatment) resulted in neither gross nor microscopic pathology. In lifetime studies in which rats
were exposed to fibers of PULPEX E polyethylene pulp instilled directly into the lung, no tissue
destruction nor permanent changes were seen.
VY.
