Weber Avenue, 3rd Floor
Stockton, California 95202
Attention: Robert McClellon
RE: Quik Stop Market No. 121
1196 West Louise Avenue, Mantica, California
CCI Project No. 12118-1
Dear Mr. McClellon:
On behalf of Quik Stop Markets, Inc. (Quik Stop), Compliance &
Closure, Inc. (CCI) hereby notifies the San Joaquin County
Environmental Health Division (the County) of Quik Stop's intention
to back -fill the open excavation at the above -referenced Quik Stop
site with the pea -gravel that is stockpiled onsite.
As you are aware, approximately 200 cubic yards of pea -gravel were
excavated from the tank area prior to the removal of the three
underground fuel tanks on March 26, 1998 and stockpiled onsite.
The pea -gravel was apparently used as back -fill during the original
installation of the three tanks. Seven soil samples were collected
from this stockpiled material and submitted to North State
Environmental (North State) for analysis of total petroleum
hydrocarbons as gasoline (TPHG), benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene and
total xylenes (BTEX) and oxygenates, using EPA Test Method 8260.
North State reported five of the seven samples to be free of
detectable petroleum contamination. Two of the seven samples were
reported to contain methyl -t -butyl -ether (MTBE) at concentrations
of 72 parts per billion (ppb) and 11 ppb. No other petroleum
compounds were reported in these samples.
In addition to the seven samples of the stockpile, CCI collected
six samples from the native soil below the bottom of the
excavation. During collection of these samples, groundwater was
encountered and two grab water samples were collected for analysis.
North State reported all six native soil samples to contain
detectable concentrations of MTBE, ranging from 43 ppb to 27,000
ppb. No other petroleum compounds were reported in these samples.
The two grab water samples were reported to contain detectable
petroleum compounds, including 1,500 ppb TPHG, 3 to 4 ppb benzene
and MTBE of 6,800 ppb and 5,900 ppb.
Recyclable and made from recycled paper.
