For damaged pipe and for leaking joints, Smith Fiberglass Products rec- ommends only the repair methods listed below. See Figure 2.9.1 which shows where leaks can occur if sec- ondary containment joints are not properly bonded. DO NOT attempt to repair damaged fittings. Upon completion of required repairs and before putting the line back into ser- vice, always pressure test the repair work according to the procedures in Part Two, Section 8, to assure the integrity of the system. 2.9.1 Replacing leaking secondary containment joints (Do not use this procedure for con- tainment crossovers) Example: 900 Secondary Contain- ment Elbow When cutting out and replacing a secondary containment fitting, be careful not to cut the internal pri- mary product pipe. (See Figure 2.9.2). 1. Dissect the secondary contain- ment fitting and the secondary con- tainment pipe around its circum- ference as shown by the arrows in Figure 2.9.3. Remove the con- tainment elbow. 2. Create a pipe nipple at least 7 inches (180mm) long on either side of the joint by making another cut around the circumference of the containment pipe as shown in Figure 2.9.4. 3. Using a sander, coarse file, or 30- 40 grit emery cloth, remove sur- face gloss from both ends of the nipples and the containment pipe. Sanded area must be a minimum of 3 inches (75mm ) in length. 4. Position the nipples between the new containment elbow and con- tainment sleeve couplings as shown in Figure 2.9.5. Note: It Pipe to Fitting f 1 t Fitting Flange to Fitting Flange Figure 2.9.1 37 may be necessary to remove addi- tional sections of the containment pipe as shown in Figure 2.9.4 to provide clearance for the coupling. 5. Bond the elbow and containment sleeve couplings into place ac- cordingto instructions in PartTwo, Section 7. 2.9.2 Repair minor pipe damage Follow the pipe patching instructions in Part One, Section 8, of this manual when the damaged area is two inches (50mm) or less in diameter (See Fig- ure 2.9.6). 2.9.3 Repairing extensive pipe dam- age When damage is less than two inches (50mm) long, but more than two inches (50mm) around the circumfer- ence of the pipe, the following repair procedures should be followed.
