L=
A series of leak detection tests were conducted using the API/Ronan Automatic
Tank Gauging System to establish tho performance capabty Of the system when
applied to mandbided systems. Two manftlded 5,000 gallon tanks containing
unleaded gasoline were used for the test.
The system evaluated was an API/Ronan X76ETM unit equipped with software
version APiGD2. This particular software was developed specifically for use on
rffv-nifolded tanks.
The level measurement is based on magnetostrictlive technology and the
temperature sensor. is an FjTD device, The data is collected by a microprocessor that
is housed in a central console unit. The X76ErM system is capable of monitoring
multiple tanks and produces inventory data such as deliveries, theft alarms, low level
alarms, and other routine features. The system can be programmed to conduct leak
testing at preset times.
The test sites used were two maior Oil company servicO stations located in
Calitbirrila. Fourteen sets of test data were collected from one site and one from a
Mifferent site. The X76ETM systems had been previously installed as a part of the
routing monitoring program for the stations. Each unit was equipped with a printer
and the results were taken directly from the printout.
Ail of the tanks hadnominal capacity of 51 oo gallons and were constructed o
af
steel. Two tanks were connected for each manifolded system so that the total
capacity tested was lo,200 gallons. A single probe was installed in each tank and the
level and temperature data combined in the console to provide a single leak rate.
IFiis is the normal configuration for the API/Ronan system.
Test data was obtained from the printojAs from each siteAll of the tanks were
assumed to be tight, an assumption that seems consistent with the measured leak
rates. Leak simulations were conducted during two of the tests (0 7 and # 8) on June
1, 1993 by introducing a nominal leak of 0.2 gallhr into the tank. The leak was
created using a peristaltic pump to remove a measured amount of product over a set
time period.
LOOISOO `i i o rriaHs OC19SL90TS XVd 01:ST WV/60
