When underground utilities may exist at a site where subsurface
soil samples are being collected, USA Underground is contacted with the boring
locations and the scheduled date of drilling, or a utility locating firm is employed to
check the boring locations.
rE-2 SURFACE AND SUBSURFACE SOIL SAMPLING
rE-2.1 Sample Collection
Surface soil samples are collected using a hand trowel, auger, or hardened metal
sampler that is cleaned before and between samples. Subsurface soil samples are
collected from soil borings using a hand auger and slidebar sampler. While advancing
the borings, an experienced environmental geologist classifies the soil, logs the lithology
and collects soil samples for laboratory analysis.
E-2.2 Decontamination of Equipment
To reduce the potential for cross-contamination, augers and associated equipment are
cleaned prior to advancing each boring. In addition, sampling equipment is cleaned
with a detergent wash and rinsed with distilled water prior to collecting each soil sample.
1
-2.3 Collection of Soil Samples
Soil samples are collected at depths up to 5 feet for field screening, lithologic logging,
and potential chemical analysis. Samples are collected by advancing the boring to a
r
125819.E01/ST013R0732 Page E-1 December 11, 2013
Copyright 2013 Kleinfelder
