2-065 -A Site Summary- Little Potato Slough 2-065 -A Thomas Guide Location Latitude N Longitude W County: San Joaquin SF Bay and Delt 3803.3 121 30 USGSQuad: Terminous NOAAChaH: 18661 SACRAMENTO/SAN JOAQUIN RIVER Last Page Update: 7/1/1996 SITE DESCRIPTION: This site extends about 4 miles from its mouth at the Stockton Deep Water Channel at G 11 northerly to its junction with the South Mokelumne River at Hwy 12. White and Potato Slough intersect this reach. Although most of its length the Slough is bordered with ripped levees, it is designated a Natural Resource Area with Significant Habitat Values (DMRP). Several Special Status Species occur here, and there are several sizable channel islands and some berm islands. At the San Joaquin River end of the channel is an ecologically rich area, Little Venice Island, which is a shallow flooded island surrounded by eroding levees and natural vegetation. This lower area is very vulnerable and difficult to remediate. This waterway is also an important path for south delta water export. SEASONAL and SPECIAL RESOURCE CONCERN Marsh and riparian vegetation here are of"A" concern year-round. Special Status Species occur here: winter-run chinook (F/SE), of considerable concern from Oct 15- May 31; the Swainson's hawk (ST); several rare plants. RESOURCES OF PRIMARY CONCERN Vulnerable marshy margins, islands and riparian growths are found throughout the length of this site, especially on marshy channel islands and Little Venice Island. The diversified aquatic community is typical for the Delta. The black rail and Swainson's hawk (ST)occur in this area. Site is rich in bird life typical of marshy and riparian species including waterfowl and marsh birds. Other vertebrates are typical riverine species. Western pond turtle occurs here. There are reports of giant garter snake here (F/ST). Juvenile winter-run chinook can be of some concern here. Juvenile and adult striped bass are typical as are warm water species. In addition to the marshy islands and margins, rare plants occur here including California hibiscus, Delta mudwort, Suisun marsh aster and Mason's lilaeopsis.
