CA AR-NG Field Quality Assurance Project Plan
10.0 DATA MANAGEMENT
This section presents general guidance for field data recording, validation, reporting, and assessment;a
more detailed description of procedures and requirements is included in the QAPP and the Data
Exchange Protocol(attachment in the analytical QAPP).
10.1 Data Recording and Validation
10.1.1 Field Data
10.1.1.1 Field data will include field logbooks, process monitoring forms, field analytical results, and
spatial data(e.g.,survey results and boring logs). A bound, numbered field notebook will be used to
record field information.A unique field identification number will be assigned to each sample throughout
the field effort.A corresponding laboratory identification number will be assigned and will be used to
track each sample through the analytical process. For drilling locations, descriptions of the lithologies
encountered and of the soil classification will be recorded on borehole logging forms.Process monitoring
and performance test forms will be completed and signed by the person making the observations.
10.1.1.2 All pages of the field notebook will be signed and dated by the person entering the data. All
data will be recorded in the field notebook or field data sheets using black ink only. All changes to
documentation will be performed by striking out the incorrect data with a single line and initialing the
dating the correction. The names and affiliations of all visitors on-site also will be noted on project
progress,problems encountered,deviations from plans(with rationale),and so forth.The field sample
identification number, along with sample collection location, sample collection date and time, sample
identification number, required analysis, and preservation will be entered on the sample label for each
container.Chain-of-custody documentation also will be completed to document the chain of possession
- and track the samples throughout shipping, handling, and analysis.
10.1.1.3 Field data(i.e.,boring logs and water level measurements)will be validated through reviews
of data sets to identify inconsistencies or anomalous values. Any inconsistencies discovered will be
resolved immediately, if possible,by seeking clarification from those personnel responsible for data
collection. All field personnel will be responsible for following the sampling and documentation
procedures described in the project-specific work plan and in the QAPP to ensure that accurate and
defensible data are obtained.
10.1.2 Laboratory Data
10.1.2.1 The laboratory will maintain logs(hard copy and electronic)to permanently record all data
results,including sample identification numbers,analytical results,detection limits,analytical methods,
and other related data. Both electronic and hard copy logs will be required as part of routine data transfer.
10.1.2.2 Laboratory personnel will assess data at the time of analysis and reporting through review of
the raw data for any nonconformances to the analytical method protocols.Data validation will be
performed by project quality control(QC)staff independently from the project laboratory as described in
the QAPP.
10.2 Data Reporting
10.2.1 Measurement data generated during the field activities will be reported in tabular form from the
computerized database to support data use and interpretation. The report formats vary depending on the
field QAPP.DOC 10-1 1 May 2000
