Messrs. Calvin and Cran
00 23 May 2008
uptake capacity. Staffs concern about the loading rate and need for additional source
control were also discussed in the meeting.
4. The proposed improvements will not reduce the FDS concentrations in a significant way.
Water Treatment Evaluation Report, prepared by Kennedy/Jenks
Staff pointed out that the 1 March 2006 Process Water Characterization and Process
m. In our
waste streams and calculated the percent of the total load per wadescribed individual
ste strea
meeting, staff noted that water softening activities contribute 23-percent a the total FDS
load and only generate 253,8585 gallons (0.31-percent) of the total 82 million gallon
wastewater flow. Based on the information presented in the report, it appears a
significant reduction in FDS loading rate is possible by segregating that waste stream
and disposing it in an alternative manner.
5. The plan to install three lined aeration ponds raises some additional issues. The
workplan describes, and in our meeting we discussed, a system to separate the dilute
stormwater flows from winery wastewater. The following concerns have been identified:
a. How much will the new ponds evapoconcentrate FDS?
b. The size of the ponds may reduce the size of the land application area available,
increasing the FDS loading rates.
6. The wine truck wash down activities described in the Workplan were previously unknown
to staff. Please provide a better description of the activities. For example: are tank
trailers cleaned at the facility? Is the cleaning a simple rinse out using tap water, or is it a
thorough cleaning using acids, caustic, and/or disinfection chemicals?
As described above, staff remains concerned about the FDS loading rate of the land
application areas. If you have any questions on this Workplan review please telephone Tim
O'Brien at (916) 464-4616 or me at (916) 464-4732.
MARY SERRA, P.E., Chief
WASTE DISCHARGE TO LAND UNIT
cc: Mike Huggins, San Joaquin County Environmental Health Department, Stockton
Robert Chrobak, P.E., Kennedy/Jenks Consultants, San Francisco
W:\Sufl\ObnanTSan JoaquirV Mondavi\Calvin 20 Mar 08.doc
