waterproof ink with the job name and number, boring number, sample depth, and the date and time the
sample was collected. The samples will be stored in an ice chest maintained at 4°C. Before the next
sample is collected, the ESP will be thoroughly cleaned in an Alconox solution and rinsed with potable
water. All borings will be backfilled with cement.
The boreholes will be logged by a qualified field geologist under the supervision of a Registered Geologist.
A description of the soil samples will be entered on a boring log form by the field geologist. This description
will at least include soil classification (ASTM D-2487-83), color, moisture content and consistency (in relative
terms), and estimated degree of hydrocarbon content (i.e., organic vapor analyzer measurements).
Selected soil samples (approximately one or two per boring) will be submitted to a State of California-
certified laboratory for chemical analyses (Chromalab, San Ramon). These samples will be analyzed for total
petroleum hydrocarbons as gasoline (TPH-G) by EPA method 5030/8015, total petroleum hydrocarbons as
diesel (TPH-D) by EPA method 3550/8015, total oil and grease (TOG) by standard method 5520 D&F, and
benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, and xylenes (BTEX) by EPA method 8020.
Groundwater monitoring wells will not be installed as part of this workplan. If it appears that groundwater
has been impacted at the site based on the results of this investigation, a separate workplan may be
prepared which addresses groundwater assessment and monitoring procedures.
QUALITY ASSURANCE/QUALITY CONTROL AND CHAIN OF CUSTODY PROCEDURES
Soil samples will be submitted to a State of California-certified analytical laboratory for chemical analyses.
Established QA/QC procedures for analytical operations will include sample custody procedures, standards
of analytical accuracy, analyses of matrix spikes and method blanks, data reduction, verification of raw
analytical data, and maintenance of control charts to monitor analytical performance. These QA/QC
procedures are outlined in the laboratory Quality Assurance/Quality Control Plan which is available upon
request. Organic chemical analyses will be performed in conformance with standard procedures established
by the EPA in "Guidelines Establishing Test Procedures for the analysis of Pollutants Under the Clean Water
Act" (40 CFR Part 136, October 1984). The laboratory is periodically evaluated through external performance
audits conducted by EPA and the State of California Department of Toxic Substances Control using
QC laboratories.
Chain of custody procedures will be used to identify and ensure traceability of the samples collected.
These procedures will also be used to document the handling and shipping procedures of the sample(s).
Specifically, the Chain of Custody procedures will trace the sample(s) from collection, through all custody
transfers, and finally to the storage facility or the analytical laboratory, where the laboratory's internal
cca/9-23-92/8809a/JAW P 12 6
