Lodi Outpatient Surgical Center/Endoscopy Center of Lodi Title: Hazardous Materials and Regulated Medical Waste Management Plan POLICY: HM 300 Page 5 of 6 State: EFFECTIVE: CMS: 416.42, 416.44 a 3 , 416.49(b)(2) 416.51 REVISED: TJC: EC.02.01.01.01 AAAHC: 7-I,J 8-M Medical waste will be stored in the Bio -hazardous Waste Storage Area located next to the medical supplies storage room at the back of the building. The containers will be labeled with the words "Bio - hazardous Waste," or the word "Biohazard," and the international biohazard symbol. This storage area will be closed at all times. Access will be limited to Environmental Services (ES) and Engineering Department personnel. Waste consisting of medical and nonmedical waste will be handled as medical waste except as follows: 1. Medical waste mixed with hazardous waste will be treated as hazardous waste. 2. Medical waste mixed with radioactive waste will be treated as radioactive waste. 3. Medical waste mixed with hazardous and radioactive waste will be treated as radioactive waste. CHEMOTHERAPEUTIC WASTE: All trace contaminated (IV bottles/bags, tubing and sharps) will be deposited in specially marked, yellow collection container labeled with the words "Chemotherapy Waste" or "Chemo." When the container is full, without compacting, the locking lid is to be secured to prevent loss of contents prior to disposal. Gowns, gloves, and other trace contaminated non -sharps objects may also be deposited in the container. These containers are picked up by "Stericycle" medical waste hauler for transport to an approved incineration facility when routine medical waste is hauled away for treatment. Vials containing unused chemotherapeutic medicine will be placed in the WHITE containers labeled top and sides with "Chemotherapy Waste" or "Chemo". The lid is then closed completely. STERICYCLE is the waste hauler to be called at 408-363-1660 for removal. PATHOLOGY WASTE: All specimens are sent to the pathology laboratories in fixative solution by courier for examination. The receiving laboratories are responsible for proper waste disposal after accepting the specimens. Medical Waste Storage Methods All medical waste will be collected and stored in the Bio -hazardous Waste Storage Area until transported by the medical waste hauler. All bio -hazardous waste shall be stored, handled or transported in containers that are leak resistant, have tight fitting covers and are kept clean and in good repair. This area shall be marked with warning signs saying in English and Spanish "CAUTION — BIOHAZARDOUS WASTE STORAGE AREA — UNAUTHORIZED PERSONNEL KEEP OUT."
