The containers will be labeled with the words "Bio - <br />hazardous Waste," or the word "Biohazard," and the international biohazard symbol. This storage <br />area will be closed at all times. Access will be limited to Environmental Services (ES) and <br />Engineering Department personnel. Waste consisting of medical and nonmedical waste will be <br />handled as medical waste except as follows: <br />1. Medical waste mixed with hazardous waste will be treated as hazardous waste. <br />2. Medical waste mixed with radioactive waste will be treated as radioactive waste. <br />3. Medical waste mixed with hazardous and radioactive waste will be treated as radioactive waste. <br />CHEMOTHERAPEUTIC WASTE: <br />All trace contaminated (IV bottles/bags, tubing and sharps) will be deposited in specially marked, <br />yellow collection container labeled with the words "Chemotherapy Waste" or "Chemo." When the <br />container is full, without compacting, the locking lid is to be secured to prevent loss of contents prior <br />to disposal. Gowns, gloves, and other trace contaminated non -sharps objects may also be deposited <br />in the container. <br />These containers are picked up by "Stericycle" medical waste hauler for transport to an approved <br />incineration facility when routine medical waste is hauled away for treatment. <br />Vials containing unused chemotherapeutic medicine will be placed in the WHITE containers labeled <br />top and sides with "Chemotherapy Waste" or "Chemo". The lid is then closed completely. <br />STERICYCLE is the waste hauler to be called at 408-363-1660 for removal. <br />PATHOLOGY WASTE: <br />All specimens are sent to the pathology laboratories in fixative solution by courier for examination. <br />The receiving laboratories are responsible for proper waste disposal after accepting the specimens. <br />Medical Waste Storage Methods <br />All medical waste will be collected and stored in the Bio -hazardous Waste Storage Area until <br />transported by the medical waste hauler. All bio -hazardous waste shall be stored, handled or <br />transported in containers that are leak resistant, have tight fitting covers and are kept clean and in <br />good repair. This area shall be marked with warning signs saying in English and Spanish "CAUTION <br />— BIOHAZARDOUS WASTE STORAGE AREA — UNAUTHORIZED PERSONNEL KEEP OUT." <br />
