MEDPARTNERS NO:
MULLHUN MEDICAL CENTER-EATON
GENERAL POLICY PAGE: 1 of 2
SUBJECT: MEDICAL WASTE MANAGEMENT PLAN DATE: August 18, 1997
POLICY:
1. All medical waste will be segregated at the point of origin into appropriate medical waste
containers. Red biohazard bags will be used and labeled with the international biohazard
symbol and the word"BIOHAZARD: or`BIOHAZARDOUS WASTE". These bags are
certified by the manufacturer to be of sufficient thickness to pass the 165 gram dropped dart
impact resistant test as described by ASTM Standard D 1709-85 (documentation is available
upon request). Bagging will be performed in a safe manner utilizing the principles of Universal
Precautions. Liquid medical wastes will routinely be placed in biohazard bags for disposal.
2. These bags will be collected daily from the point of origination and tied to prevent leakage or
expulsion of the contents. The bags will be placed in a leak resistant rigid container with a
tight fitting cover. These containers will be prominently labeled with the words
"BIOHAZARDOUS WASTE" or the word"BIOHAZARD". Containers supplied by the
listed hauler will be cleaned and maintained by that company upon emptying the contents.
Containers supplied by Mullikin Medical Centers will be completely protected by a disposable
liner. Containers used at the point of waste generation will be emptied on a daily basis. Any
contaminated surfaces will be decontaminated using an approved disinfectant on an as needed'
basis.
3. Any potentially"sharp" medical waste generated in a laboratory setting shall be disposed in
red rigid containers that have the biohazard symbol clearly displayed.
4. All sharps waste will be placed directly into a rigid puncture resistant container. When
containers are 3/4 full they shall be closed, sealed and transported to the medical waste storage
area. Appropriately sealed sharps containers may be place in red medical waste bags.
5. All of the above medical waste shall be stored in the medical waste storage area in a leak-
proof, rodent-proof, storage container with a tight fitting lid. Each container is marked by the
medical waste hauler to identify the generating institution and labeled with the international
biohazard symbol. Medical waste will not be stored on-site longer than seven days.
6. All medical waste generated in a pathology shall be handled according to the above guidelines
except that gross anatomical remains shall be placed in a red rigid waste container. Ten
percent formalin solution will be poured off and disposed of according to state and local
regulations. The remaining tissue will be collected and placed in the medical storage area and
designated as"Pathology Waste". Large anatomical remains too large for the red rigid
containers will be double red bagged and placed in a cardboard box for incineration. The box
will be labeled "Pathology Waste" with the international biohazard symbol. This will be picked
up for direct disposal by our current medical waste hauler.
