POLICY A*ND PRO&.DURE <br />INFECTION CONTROL I <br />COLLECTION AND DISPOSAL OF INFECTIOUS WASTE <br />PAGE 2 <br />EQUIPMENT <br />A. Red plastic bags for all disposable infectious waste. Each bag shall be con- <br />structed of material of sufficient single strength to pass the 165 gram dropped <br />dart impact resistance test as presented by Standard D 1709-75 of American <br />Society of Testing and Materials and certified by the bag manufacturer. The <br />bags must be labeled as Infectious Waste or with the biohazard symbol. <br />B. Clear plastic decontaminated bags for infectious waste: <br />C. Waste container in each area of patient care labeled "Infectious Waste" on the <br />lid and on the sides. The containers must be leak proof and with tight fitting <br />covers. <br />D. Infectious Waste transportation cart which is leak proof and with a tight <br />fitting cover. <br />I <br />E. Container bin for infectious waste with labels reading legibly from a distance <br />of 25 feet. "Caution - Infectious Waste Storage Area - Unauthorized Persons <br />Keep Out." Container must be secured so as to prevent any access to unauthorized <br />persons. <br />` PROCEDURE <br />A. Solid infectious waste: <br />1. Employees shall dispose of infectious waste in double red bags as described <br />in Equipment - A above. <br />2. These bags are to be kept securely tied so as to prevent leakage during <br />handling or transport. <br />3. The red bags are to be placed in the closest Infectious Waste container. <br />Infectious waste bags are not to be stored on the floor. <br />4. Bag material going to Central Supply to be sterilized in clear plastic <br />decontaminated bags. <br />5. Housekeeping will routinely pick up infectious waste. Notify Housekeeping <br />if an additional collection is required. <br />6. Housekeeping will transport infectious waste in an infectious waste trans- <br />portation cart to a separate infectious waste bin <br />7. The hospital waste bin and infectious waste transportation cart will be <br />thoroughly washed and decontaminated by exposure to hot water of at least <br />82°C (180°F) each time they are emptied. <br />B. .
