LODI MEMORIAL HOSPITAL D-8420-90 <br />FACILITIES MANAGEMENT REVISED: JUNE, 2011 <br />ENVIRONMENT OF CARE PAGE 1 OF 1 <br />MEDICAL WASTE MANAGEMENT <br />RESPONSIBILITIES <br />I. POLICY <br />A. Environmental Services staff is responsible for seeing that the medical waste produced by Lodi <br />Memorial Hospital is handled safely and in accordance with California rules and regulations. <br />Facilities Management maintains documentation related to medical waste handling. <br />B. The Medical Waste Disposal Vendor is responsible for removing and managing the filled <br />pharmaceutical waste containers within Lodi Memorial Hospital. As a contingency plan, <br />Environmental Services will exchange full pharmaceutical or sharps containers for empty between <br />service and transport the full containers to the appropriate designated biohazardous containment <br />holding area. The Medical Waste Disposal Vendor transports medical waste off-site for disposal <br />according to regulation guidelines. <br />H. PURPOSE <br />To ensure that medical waste is handled and stored in a safe and secure manner to minimize exposure to <br />patients, visitors, staff, and community. <br />III. PROCEDURE <br />A. When cleaning patient care areas, Environmental Services or contracted janitorial Services places all <br />medical red biohazard waste bags into the appropriate rigid container, securely ties the red biohazard <br />bag and places a tight fitting lid, exchanges full sharps containers for empty sharps containers and <br />transports collection tubs to designated biohazard storage area. The Medical Waste Disposal Vendor <br />is responsible for medical waste transport off-site for disposal according to regulation guidelines. <br />B. Pharmaceutical -generated waste is managed by the Medical Waste Disposal Vendor and <br />Environmental Services until placed into the locked storage area outside the hospital building. No <br />access is permitted into the pharmaceutical waste collection/storage area other than Medical Waste <br />Disposal Vendor, Environmental Services, and the Safety Officer. <br />REVISED: 11/04, 4/07,5/10 <br />REVIEWED: <br />L:\LMH\P&P\EOC\D- MEDICAL WASTED-8420-90.doc <br />
