The
labeling is in English& Spanish.
❖ Red infectious waste bags are removed from the waste generating area to a
centralized collection point in the soiled utility room and placed in the
container labeled, "Infectious"or"Biohazard", for temporary storage.
°e• All red infectious waste bags are picked up from the soiled utility rooms
routinely throughout the day.
•.° The handler places the full infectious waste liners into a cart labeled
"Infectious Waste"or"Biohazard". The cart is covered with a lid and is used
exclusively for infectious waste pick-up only.
❖ The infectious waste is then transported to the infectious waste holding area,
which is gated& secured. Assess is restricted.
❖ The handler carefully removes each bag of infectious waste from the
transportation cart and places it in a round, gray, plastic trash container
labeled"Biohazard".
❖ Pathological Waste, i.e. placenta, is placed in separate red containers labeled
"Pathological Waste".
❖ Chemotherapy Waste(Hazardous Waste) is placed into yellow containers
labeled, "Chemotherapy Waste".
•s• The handler then presses a lid firmly onto the containers and places a special
barcode sticker that alerts the medical waste hauling company that the
container is full and ready for pick-up and processing.
The medical waste company, Stericycle, Inc., checks each container, scans the
sticker, which allows for medical waste tracking, and generates an
AUTOCLAVE TRACKING DOCUMENT.
❖ The document is signed and a document copy &receipt is given. An
additional copy of the document&receipt is made and placed in a file in the
Director of Environmental Services' office. The original document copy&
receipt is sent to Plant Operations for additional filing.
❖ Stericycle, Inc. then assumes responsibility for all infectious waste hauling,
processing, and disposal at this point.
