V. <br />POI TCY- <br />HOUSEKEEPING <br />HAZARDOUS SUBSTANCE SAFETY PLAN <br />HAZARDOUS SUBSTANCE ACCIDENT <br />11 <br />To protect staff, visitors and patients from exposure in the event of a <br />Hazardous Substance accident or spill. <br />PURPOSE: <br />To ensure the safe handling of Hazardous Substance accidents or spills <br />by qualified personnel. <br />PROCEDURE: <br />I. In.ne event of a minor Hazardous Substance spill which can be safely <br />handled and cleaned up it will be the responsibility of the department <br />using the chemical to clean up the spill. This shall be done by a <br />qualified person trained and assigned to the department in the use of <br />the chemical spilled. <br />1. Promptly notify your immediate supervisor. <br />2. Restrict access to the area. <br />3. Utilizing the information from the MSDS, clean up the spill. <br />4. Place all contaminated material in an orange Biohazard bag (obtained <br />from Laboratory) and dispose of as instructed on the MSDS. <br />5. Notify your supervisor when spill has been cleaned up. <br />II. In the event of a large spill, one that could require the evacuation of <br />hospital personnel, the following procedures shall be followed. <br />1. Notify switchboard operator of the spill. Give the location of the <br />spill and type of chemical involved. Advise them to notify the Fire <br />Department of same. Give as much information as possible. <br />2. Prepare for possible evacuation of patients, staff or visitors. <br />3. Restrict area, obtain MSDS from your departmental file and give to <br />the Fire Department upon their arrival. Wait for their instructions. <br />
