MANAGEMENT OF ICTIOUS WASTE is <br />rnntainmant <br />1. All sharps (needles, syringes, pipettes, broken glass, scalpel blades) <br />shall be collected in leak proof, rigid, puncture-resistent containers <br />- with secure lids. Sharps will be placed intact into container that is <br />located as close to the area in which they are used as practical. <br />Needles should not be recapped, purposely bent, broken, or otherwise <br />manipulated by hand. <br />2. Infectious waste, except sharps, will be contained in double -bagged, <br />disposable read plastic bags, tied securely to prevent leakage and <br />labeled as "Infectious Waste". <br />3. Infectious waste shall be segreated from othe waste at the point of <br />origin (e.g., bedside, surgery suite, lab, etc.). <br />4. On the nursing units, contained infectious waste will be placed in <br />containers that are lined with a red plastic bag, labeled "Infectious Waste". <br />Handling and Transportation <br />1. All personnel who will handle and transport infectious waste to the <br />San-i-pak will wear appropriate protective gear. <br />2. Infectious waste will be collected and transported to the San-i-pak <br />separately from regular waste. <br />3. Infectious waste shall be transported to the San-i-pak in a leakproof, <br />fully enclosed container or vehicle compartment labeled "Infectious <br />Waste" or•marked with a biohazard symbol so as to discourage entry by <br />unauthorized personnel. <br />4. These contianers and/or vehicle compartments shall be cleaned after <br />each shift (per Calif. Adm. Code, Section 66840(k)). <br />Treatment <br />1. All infectious waste will be sterilized by the on-site San-i-pak. <br />2. All infectious waste will be placed in autoclave bags, then in the <br />sterlizer from the carts. Waste must not be placed on ground, to <br />prevent access of rodents, animals, or humans. <br />3. All personnel who process infectious waste will wear appropriate <br />protective gear. <br />4. Consult plant operations department policy in the event of sterilizer <br />failure. <br />
