Californias Street
Stockton, CA 9 213
Dear M r. Lobb:
In response to your inquiry, I an supplying you with
relevant data on the acceptance f the new testing methods of the
polyethylene bags.
With the new technologies in producing polyethylene film,
it has been observed that "mil thickness" is no longer ars adequate
test for polyethylene strength. The American society for Testing
and Materials (A.S.T.M. ) has de v lop d a method to test the impact
resistance of polyethylene film. This vethod in called the Zraa
paliine_rlart Metho,. The A. S,,T.M. designation for this test Method
is D1709-67. This test method is conducted as follows:
A conioal-shaped weighted dart is dropped from a height
of 26 inches onto a stationery piece of polyethylenes film
with uniform mil thickness. The drop is repeated over
five different sections of the teat. film. If 50% of the
drags fraoture the polyethylene, the film fails at that
dart weight, measured n grams.
It is important to note that tht results of the test are
greaeatl influenced by the quality of the film under the
tt f' ITA.
The A.S.T.M. also etates that a correlation between test
results and field performance can be established.
The Free i'alling Dart Method is uaed by the National
Bureau of Standards in. establishing standards for polyethylene
sheeting. The fid.D.8, developed the minimum mart Impact in grams
for various sail thickness. in December, 1983, California
Admi iestr at,i.vo Code, Title 22, Rivi ion Four, Environmental Hbealth,
tiole 1S - Infectious Waste, Paragraph F, states that
"Each beg shall be construed of material of sufficient
single thickness vi,-rength to pass the 165 Cream Dropped
Dart Impact Resistant Test as prescribed by D1709-67 of
