DISPOSING, 1LLECTING, TRANSPORTING AND TREATING <br />REGULATED MEDICAL WASTE <br />Segregation of Wastes <br />Medical waste includes biohazardous waste or sharps waste, waste that is generated or produced as <br />a result of the diagnosis, treatment or immunization of human beings or waste generated in the <br />production of testing of biologicals. Medical waste may contain infectious agents, which are any <br />type of microorganism, bacteria, mold, parasite or virus which normally causes or significantly <br />contributes to the cause of increased morbidity or mortality of human beings. <br />Medical waste is contained separately from other wastes at the point of generation. Medical waste <br />shall be handled and disposed of in accordance with the Medical Waste Management Act, Health <br />and Safety Code Section 25015 et.al. Seq. and regulations adopted there under, California Code of <br />Regulations, Title 22, Division 4, Chapter 21, Articles 1 through 4, commencing with Section <br />65600 and ending with Section 65628. As defined in Health and Safety Code Section 25023.2. <br />1) Utilizing proper PPE and following Standard Precautions is required when handling, packaging <br />or transporting any medical waste bags, containers or receptacles, PPE supplies and equipment <br />will be maintained in all areas generating medical waste. <br />2) All medical waste will be placed into designated biohazardous waste receptacles. Biohazardous <br />waste receptacles are located in close proximity to patient care areas (located in the HUTS of <br />each housing unit). Approved waste receptacles shall be rolled to the point of medical waste <br />generation; the red plastic bags shall not be hand -carried to the receptacles. <br />3) Each `Biohazardous Waste" receptacle will have a large red plastic bag marked, `Biohazardous <br />Waste" open inside. <br />a. These receptacles will be located in a locked designated area away from direct contact <br />with inmate -patients. <br />i. The large red plastic bag may be used to collect more than one inmate -patient's <br />medical waste. <br />ii. All medical waste must be handled with extreme care in order to prevent any <br />possible cross -contamination. <br />iii. All medical waste must be double -bagged and disposed of. <br />iv. Red bags shall never be transported outside of an approved rigid container. <br />4) When the large red plastic bag inside a container is 3/ full, the biohazardous waste in the <br />receptacle will be removed and placed directly into a hard leak -proof and rodent -proof container <br />utilized for medical waste. <br />a. The bag will be properly tied, a lid will be placed on the container and the lid will be <br />securely fastened onto the container. <br />b. The hard, leak -proof and rodent -proof container will then be placed onto the <br />transportation cart. <br />5) All sharps will be placed into a sharps container labeled with the words, "Sharps Waste" or with <br />the international biohazard symbol and the word, "Biohazard." Syringes and needles shall be <br />disposed of safely in biohazardous and/or radioactive waste and in puncture proof containers in <br />accordance with Health and Safetly Sections 25080 through 25082, pertaining to medical waste <br />2 <br />
