• 0 <br />3. A white bin with a blue top shall be used for non -chemotherapeutic waste and yellow bins with <br />white tops shall be used for chemotherapeutic waste. <br />4. All pharmaceutical waste containers shall be in compliance with applicable laws and regulations <br />and shall be affixed with appropriate labels or markings to distinguish them from other waste <br />categories. <br />5. Nursing staff picks up pharmaceutical waste from the housing units to a container in the HUT. <br />MSC staff is responsible for collection of the pharmaceutical waste from the HUT areas and for <br />transporting the pharmaceutical waste to pharmacy storage no later than Monday evening before <br />Tuesday morning where it will be stored in the Designated Accumulation Area. The Warehouse <br />Manager II shall be responsible for ensuring this process is carried out. <br />Procedures for handling pharmaceutical spills or exposures <br />1. Pharmacy staff shall reduce the risk of personal or environmental exposure by aerosol <br />generation, spraying or spillage of parenteral, anti -neoplastic medications when handling vials, <br />needles, syringes, glass ampoules, and IV bottles or bags by performing the following: <br />a. Pressure -equalize vials containing reconstituted parenteral antineoplastic in order to <br />reduce the possibility of spraying when a needle is withdrawn from the septum of the <br />cap. <br />b. Use syringes and IV sets with Luer -Lok fittings. ' <br />c. To open a glass ampoule, wipe the ampoule with alcohol before opening, tap down the <br />contents gently from the neck and the top portion of the ampoule and wrap the neck of <br />the ampoule with a sterile gauze pad when opening. <br />d. Venting divices with 0.21im hydrophobic filters and 5µm needles may be used. <br />e. External surfaces of syringes and IV bottles shall be wiped clean of any contamination. <br />2. Chemo Spill Kit shall be kept by the Vertical Laminar Hood or in areas where anti -neoplastic <br />and cytotoxic agents are handled in the pharmacy. <br />3. A special chemotherapy label will be attached to anti -neoplastic and cytotoxic agent -containing <br />IV bottles, IV bags or pre -filled syringes prepared in the pharmacy prior to transporting to the <br />nursing units (e.g."Caution: Chemotherapy -Dispose of Properly"). <br />5 <br />
