`- <br /> in <br /> :' living Medical Waste Handling <br /> IC-513 Clinical Infection Prevention and <br /> Control <br /> POLICY STATEMENT: <br /> Medical waste will be handles and disposed of safely and in accordance with regulatory <br /> requirements <br /> THIS POLICY APPLIES TO: <br /> DEFINITIONS (AS NEEDED): <br /> Policy Interpretation and Implementation <br /> Items Constituting Medical 1.For the purpose of this policy,medical wastes include human blood and blood-soiled <br /> Waste articles,contaminated items(i.e.soiled dressings),and disposable sharps(e.g. <br /> needles/scalpels). <br /> State Regulations 2.Medical waste is regulated at the state level.State medical waste regulations can be <br /> accessed at:http://www.epa.gov/osw/nonhWindustrial/medical/programs.htm. <br /> Sharps 3. All sharps must be handled as medical waste,placed in approved sharps containers, <br /> and sent for eventual incineration <br /> Blood/Excretions/Secretions 4.Liquid blood,excretions,and secretions shall be flushed into the sewer system <br /> Contaminated Disposable S. Disposable items contaminated with excretions or secretions from residents believed <br /> Items to be infectious must be placed in plastic bags and sealed,and either decontaminated <br /> with bleach/EPA registered germicidal(1:10 or 1:100 dilution)or stored in <br /> appropriate container until removal from the premises. <br /> Disposable Items Soiled 6. Disposable items soiled with blood or other potentially infectious materials must be <br /> with Blood/OPIM placed in plastic bags or containers,and a solution of one(1)part bleach/EPA <br /> registered germicidal and nine(9)parts water added to saturate the items. <br /> Alternatively,items can be placed in appropriate containers and handled as medical <br /> waste. <br /> Weighing Medical Wastes 7.Medical wastes will be weighed at the time of collection and/or storage prior to <br /> disposal,per state requirements. <br /> 8. is responsible for weighing <br /> medical wastes. <br /> Recording Weight of 9.
