Bloodborne Pathogens Exposure Control Plan ;E
Regulated Waste, continued living centers
Blood, Liquid blood, excretions and secretions will be flushed into the toilet.
excretions, All fluid-filled containers e. suction canisters, hemovacs may be emptied
secretions (g• ) Y P
directly into a hopper or toilet. Employees may need to wear protective attire
to protect themselves from splashes.
Patient/resident
care equipment
Wound
dressings
IV tubing
Disposable items soiled with moist body substances, visible blood or
feces from a patient/resident known to have a disease that can be
transmitted through blood or feces must either be placed in 3 -mil plastic
bags and a solution of one (1) part bleach and nine (9) parts water (or
designated facility solution) added to saturate the item, or they must be
incinerated.
If fluid-filled containers are disposed of without emptying, follow the
regulated waste handling procedures of the facility. These procedures must
use closeable containers that are leakproof and are either red or biohazard
labeled. If the outside of the container becomes contaminated, the regulated
waste must be placed in a second labeled or red container before being
transported by a licensed infectious -waste hauler.
Any non -disposable patient/resident care equipment that is soiled with
_regulated waste will be rinsed off and disinfected according to procedure.
All wound dressings are to be disposed of in a manner so as to "confine and
contain" any blood/body fluids that may be present:
• Small dressings can be enclosed in the disposable glove used to remove
the dressing. Pull the glove off inside -out containing the dressing inside
of it. This dressing and the gloves can then be discarded and removed
from the patient's/resident's room upon completion of the procedure.
• Larger dressings should be removed using gloved hands and placed into
a leakproof bag. Small plastic bags are available as a "dressing change
bag" that can be used at the bedside. This bag can be used for the old
dressing, gloves and other trash from the dressing change procedure.
• Any dressing containing liquid or semi-liquid blood or other potentially
infectious material that could be released if compressed or is caked with
dried blood or other potentially infectious material capable of releasing
these materials during handling will be disposed of as regulated waste.
• Gloves must be wom when changing dressings and/or handling items
contaminated with blood/body fluids and/or other regulated waste.
All IV tubing will be considered regulated waste and handled appropriately.
Golden Living Safety & Loss Control Department Page 38 of Sl
