Page 3
DEFINITION OF INFECTIOUS WASTE
1. For this program, infectious waste is to be defined as all
disposable fomites coming in contact with any kind of
secretions and excreta from a resident.
2. The following are to .be included in (but not limited to) the
definition of infectious waste:
a. Significant laboratory wastes (including specimens of
tissues, blood elements, excreta and secretions) and
their disposable fomites.
b. Urine excreta, fecal excreta, resident body secretions
and materials contaminated by them (for example, wound
dressings, catheter equipment, syringes and needles and
enema equipment).
I POLICY FOR HANDLING INFECTIOUS WASTE
It is a policy of Western Division that disposable gloves will be
worn when handling infectious waste in a manner that would result
in one's hands coming into contact with the infectious waste.
Wearing gloves does not alleviate the need for thorough hand
washing. Hand washing will occur immediately after removing the
gloves from one's hands.
