DISPOSAL OF INFECTIOUS OR CONTAMINATED WASTE <br />All infectious or contaminated waste shall be disposed of in the <br />following manner: <br />I. Used Syringes and Needles <br />All needles and syringes will be discarded uncapped and uncu. <br />into a one-way, puncture proof disposal unit. When the <br />container is 3/4 full it is sealed, and placed in the <br />infectious waste area. <br />II. Other Infectious or Contaminated Waste <br />A. Definition: <br />Swabs, dressings, catheters, nasogastric and enema tubing, <br />gloves or any item of a disposable nature that comes in <br />contact with the resident's body secretions would be <br />classified as infectious or contaminated waste. <br />Note: Supplies should be disposed of as infectious waste <br />if used with high risk body fluids. They should be <br />disposed of as contaminated waste if used for low risk <br />body fluids. See Infection Control Guidelines for <br />personnel working with AIDS/HBV/ARC/Positive HTLV <br />Procedure #3 for definition of high risk/low risk body <br />fluids. <br />B. Equipment: <br />Whenever possible red he y d ty plastic bags shall be <br />utilized. If these are no- vailable, a _&LQu) <br />heavy duty plastic bag labe d in red as infectious or <br />contaminated waste shall be ceptable. <br />C. Procedure for Disposal: <br />1. Treatments: <br />During treatments all contaminated waste shall be put <br />into individual plastic bags; the plastic bags shall b( <br />deposited in the plastic bag attached to the treatment <br />cart. Following completion of treatments, the DliR 4-M <br />treatment cart bag shall be taken to_� <br />for later disposal. The 4 ml red plastic bag attached <br />to treatment cart shall be closed at all times. <br />2. Utility Room: <br />For infectious or contaminated waste, an infectious <br />waste container lined with a plastic bag and -properly <br />labeled shall be kept in the utility room. When the <br />container is reasonably full, the maintenance <br />supervisor shall be responsible for double -bagging the <br />contents of the container and transferring the plastic <br />bag to the locked storage area for infectious waste. <br />The infectious waste containers shall be cleaned by <br />maintenance. <br />-159- <br />
