PRODUCERS OF INFECTIOUS WASTE
The State of California has determined that infectious waste po
a health hazard based either upon the potential virulence of th::
waste item, or the sheer volume of material present. As a resu'l-
the regulations apply to any health care facility which is
licensed under one of the following categories:
. General acute care hospital
. Acute psychiatric hospital
. Skilled nursing facility
. Intermediate care facility
. Intermediate care facility for the
developmentally disabled
It also encompasses any of the following primary care clinics
defined and licensed under Chapter 1, Division,2 of the Health
Safety Code:
. Community clinics
. Free clinics
• Employee clinics
. Surgical clinics
. Chronic dialysis clinics
. Rehabilitation clinics
These facilities have been included in the regulations due to
concentration of potentially harmful organisms in the waste
products. Like the five categories above, these facilities ars
regulated regardless of the volume of material generated.
Sheer volume of material poses a threat as well. It.is estimat
that California generates upwards of 90 million pounds of
infectious waste each year. Therefore, ANY producer of more ti
100 kilograms (220 pounds) per month of infectious waste must
comply with regulations. For example, although not specifical,
listed above, the 100 kilogram clause could include many
physician's offices, veterinarians, research centers,
laboratories, or urgent care centers.
4135'WEST SWIFT AVENUE • FRESNO, CALIFORNIA 93722 9 (209) 275.0991
