APPENDIX F: OSHA - Continued <br />B. Inspection/Enforcement Procedures: <br />The following are inspection/enforcement procedures. <br />1. Recorded inspection: OSHA will review the OSHA 200 Log of <br />Occupational Injuries and Illnesses to look for needlestic}: <br />or cut/puncture wounds. The inspection may include a <br />walkaround and employee interviews. <br />2. The Infection Control (IC) program will be reviewed and <br />employees will be interviewed to determine their level of <br />knowledge. <br />3. Training records will be scrutinized for completion. <br />Training must be given to new employees and at regular <br />intervals. <br />4. Other employees or employers on our premises, if not <br />protected by personal protective equipment, must also be <br />provided with protection. You could be cited for a <br />violation if a lab company draws blood at your facility and <br />they are unprotected. <br />C. Protective Measures: <br />The following protective measures shall have been addressed by <br />the IC program and shall be verified by interviews and the <br />walkaround. <br />1. Gloves - The use of gloves will vary according to procedure} <br />involved. The use of disposable gloves is indicated for <br />procedure where body fluids are handled. <br />a. The use of gloves is particularly important in the <br />following circumstances: <br />1) If the health care worker has cuts, abraded skin, <br />chapped hands, dermatitis or the like. <br />2) During instrumental examination of oropharynx, <br />gastrointestinal tract and genitourinary tract. <br />3) When examining abraded or non -intact skin or <br />residents with active bleeding. <br />4) During invasive procedures. <br />5) During all cleaning of body fluids and <br />decontamination procedures. <br />b. Gloves must be appropriate material, usually intact <br />latex or intact vinyl, of appropriate quality'for the <br />procedure performed, and of appropriate size for each <br />health care worker. <br />-217- <br />
