E <br />Definition Infectious waste is to be defined as all disposable fomites <br />coming in contact with any kind of secretions and, excreta <br />from a resident. <br />The following is to be included, but not limited to, the <br />definition of infectious waste: <br />■ blood, urine excreta, fecal excreta, body secretions and <br />material contaminated by them (for example, wound <br />dressings, catheter equipment, syringes and needles and <br />enema equipment). <br />Policy Handle and dispose of infectious waste in a manner as to <br />protect the staff, residents and community from the spread of <br />infections. <br />Procedure <br />for Infect- <br />ious Waste <br />Use the following procedure in reference to infectious waste. <br />STEP <br />ACTION <br />1 <br />Personnel <br />involved in the handling and disposal of <br />infectious <br />waste will be informed of the potential <br />health and <br />safety hazard and trained in appropriate <br />handling and <br />disposal methods. <br />2 <br />If processing and/or disposal facilities are not <br />available <br />at the site of generation, the waste will <br />be safely <br />transported in sealed impervious contain- <br />ers to another <br />site for appropriate disposal <br />according <br />to state laws. <br />3 <br />Infectious <br />waste awaiting terminal processing will <br />be sorted <br />in an area accessible only to authorized <br />personnel <br />trained to handle the disposal process. <br />Continued on next page <br />® x / <br />
