Bingham, <br />Collectively# the procedures and methods used to separate and <br />handle infectious waste are those required by Title 22 of the <br />California • - • • - and the California- • <br />Safety Code. <br />The State •:Californiadetermined .: - • -. <br />Generalyoses a health hazard based either upon the potential viru ence <br />of the waste item, or the sheer volume of material present. As a <br />resultr the regulations apply to any health care facility which <br />is licensed under one of the following categories: <br />- care hospital <br />. Acute psychiatrichospital <br />Skillednursing <br />intermediate <br />Intermediate care facility for the <br />developmentally disabled <br />It also encompasses any of the following primary care clinics <br />defined and licensed under Chapter 1p Division 2 of the Health <br />fSafetyCode: <br />Community clinics <br />Free clinics <br />Employee <br />Surgical clinics <br />Chronic dialysis clinics <br />Rehabilitation clinics <br />CaliforniaThese facilities have been included in the regulations due to the <br />concentration of potentially harmful organisms in the waste <br />products. Like the five catagories above, these fa. ilities are <br />regulated regardless of the volume of material generated. <br />Pheer volume of material poses a threat as well.- it is estimated <br />that generates upwards of h million pounds of <br />infectious waste each year. Therefore, ANY producer of more than <br />100 • • 1 pounds) per • / of / - •us waste must <br />comply with regulations. For example, although not specifically <br />listed above, the 100 kilogram clause could include many <br />1whysician's offices, veterinarians, research centers, <br />laboratoriest or urgent care centers. <br />A <br />
