MAY 1967 <br /> INFECTIOUS WASTE PLAN <br /> PURPOSE <br /> To dispose of infectious waste effectively, to prevent the spread <br /> of pathogens. <br /> The following shall be considered as infectious waste in this facility, <br /> at Vienna Convalescent Hospital, Inc. <br /> 1. Used ileostomy bags and equipment, and nasogastric tubes. <br /> 2. Used catheter bags and tubing. <br /> 3. Any item contaminated by body fluids from a patient's room <br /> containing etiologic agents. <br /> 4. Used items such as the following contaminated with etiologic <br /> agents. <br /> 4%4's <br /> bandages <br /> telfa pads <br /> betadine swabs <br /> cotton balls used for treatments <br /> gloves used for treatments <br /> hypodermic needles and syringes <br /> suction catheters e <br /> PROCEDURE <br /> In rooms with known or suspected etiologic agents, place infectious waste in <br /> covered containers, properly marked infectious waste, lined with a red plastic <br /> bag marked infectious waste. The red bags will be of approved strength stated in <br /> Title 22. Containers in the room are to be removed and taken to outside locked <br /> closet market with the approved infectious waste symbol as stated in Title 22. <br /> -All infectious waste materials will be double red bagged and placed in <br /> approved containers within the locked closet and will be picked up weekly by <br /> an approved infectious waste hauler. <br /> The re-usable container in this facility is protected from contamination <br /> by a disposable red bag that is used to line the container and is removed with <br /> the waste. Containers are washed with SK-45 disinfectant by the housekeeping super- <br /> visor in the outside locked infectious waste area. <br /> Needles and syringes shall be contained in a red, puncture resistant container, <br /> without the needles being broken in any way. When the container is 3/4 full, it <br /> shall be tightly capped, and disposed of in the infectious waste container, cexside <br /> in the locked closet marked with approved sign for infectious waste to be removed <br /> with other infectious waste. <br /> Instruments and trays used in treatments shall be properly washed, wrapped, <br /> clearly dated and identified, autoclaved, and stored for future use. All unused <br /> trays shall be sterilized on a monthly basis. <br /> Kilit test ampule will be processed monthly and submitted to the lab, <br /> 122 a <br />
