HOSP. <br /> DATE EFFECTIVE: DATE REVISED: <br /> Air ,1976 <br /> POLICY <br /> INFECTIOUS WASTE <br /> 405.1135 72643 <br /> Infectious Wastes as defined by policy in this facility should <br /> include any substance which may harbor or transmit pathogenic <br /> organisms. <br /> Infectious wastes are defined as : <br /> (1) All tissues, specimens or blood elements, excreta <br /> d secretions obtained from patients. <br /> (2) Any disposable product that comes in contact with <br /> the patient. <br /> (3) Equipment, instruments, utensils and fomites of a <br /> disposable nature, from the rooms of patients with <br /> suspected or diagnosed communicable disease requiring <br /> isolation. <br /> PROCEDURE <br /> Methods of Disposal <br /> All infectious waste will be put into a separate plastic bag <br /> and marked CONTAMINATED WASTE. <br /> r If the material is burnable it shall be carried to the <br /> incinerator and burned. <br /> If the material is to be laundred it shall be handled <br /> according to our policy on contaminated linen. <br /> If the material is to be sterilized it shall be handled <br /> according to our sterilization of contaminated instruments <br /> 1 <br /> policy. <br /> The person who first takes the responsibility of any infectious <br /> wastes is responsible for the process of disposal. <br />
