r <br /> POLICY and PROCEDURE <br /> FACILITY: POLICY NUMBER: <br /> Vista Ray Conuaesceat: dospatal <br /> DATE EFFEC'T'IVE: DATE REVISED: <br /> November 1986 May 1987 <br /> SUBJECT : INFECTIOUS WASTE <br /> POLICY : To provide a sanitary method of containment <br /> and disposal of infectious waste . <br /> DEFINITION : Infectious waste is any substancq which may <br /> harbor or transmit pathogenic organisms . <br /> These are : <br /> 1 . All tissues , specimens or blood <br /> elements , excreta and secretions ' <br /> obtained from patients . <br /> 2 . Any disposable product that comes <br /> in contact with the patient . <br /> 3. Equipment , instruments , utensils <br /> and fomites of a disposable nature , <br /> from the rooms of patients with <br /> suspected or diagnosed communicable <br /> disease requiring i §olation . <br /> STORAGE : 1. White garbage cans labeled " INFECTIOUS <br /> WASTE" are located in each utility room. <br /> They are lined with red plastic bags <br /> marked infectious waste . They are secure- <br /> ly tied and deposited in ,the designated <br /> storage area on Station II daily by the <br /> housekeeping staff. The cans are washed <br /> daily with A-33 by the housekeeping staff. <br /> 2 . The designated infectious waste storage <br /> area is located on hall five , Station II . <br /> This locked room is identified by the red <br /> and white sign which reads in English and <br /> Spanish : CAUTION- INFECTIOUS WASTE STORAGE <br /> AREA, UNAUTHORIZED PERSONS KEEP OUT . <br /> This room contains plastic garbage bins <br /> sijpplied by the Bingham Company which are <br /> lined with red plastic bags marked " INFEC- <br /> TIOUS WASTE°'. <br /> PROCEDURE : 1 . All infectious waste will be put into a <br /> red plastic bag at the bedside as generated . <br /> 2 . ft is securely tied and placed in the in- <br /> fectious waste garbage can in the utility <br /> room, or taken directly to the designated <br />
