• <br /> VI. DISPOSAL OF INFECTRUS OR CONTAMINATED WASTE <br /> All infectious or contaminated waste shall be disposed of in the <br /> following manner : <br /> A. Used Syringes and Needles <br /> All needles and syringes will be rendered unfit for use by break- <br /> ing the needle and barrel tips off . All parts shall be depos- <br /> ited in heavy duty cardboard boxes , either red in color or <br /> labeled in red and marked as contaminated waste . These boxes are <br /> located—1-n When full , the boxes shall be <br /> sealed with tape and deposited in the infectious waste container in <br /> the locked infectious waste area. <br /> B . Other Infectious or Contaminated Waste <br /> 1 . Definition: <br /> Swabs , dressings , catheters , nasogastric and enema tubing , <br /> gloves or any item of a disposable nature that comes in contact <br /> with the patient ' s body secretions would be classified as <br /> infectious or contaminated waste. <br /> 2 . Equipment : <br /> Whenever possible red heavy duty lactic bags shall be utilized . <br /> A. If these are not available , a i'1 heavy duty plas- <br /> tic bag labeled in red as infectious or contaminated waste <br /> shall be acceptable . <br /> 3 . Procedure for Disposal: <br /> a. Treatments : <br /> During treatments all contaminated waste shall be put into <br /> individual plastic bags ; the plastic bags shall be depos- <br /> ited in the plastic bag attached to the treatment cart . <br /> Following completion of treatments , the treatment cart bag <br /> shall be taken to for later disposal . <br /> b . Utility Room. <br /> For infectious or contaminated waste , an infectious waste <br /> container lined with a plastic bag and properly labeled <br /> shall be kept in the utility room. <br /> When the container is <br /> reasonably full, the maintenance supervisor shall be res- <br /> ponsible for double-bagging the contents of the container <br /> and transferring the plastic bag to the locked storage <br /> area for infectious waste . The infectious waste containers <br /> shall be cleaned by maintenance . <br /> c . Locked Storage Area : <br /> Infectious waste in the container in the ] naked storage area <br /> shall be removed for incineration by <br /> (For details , see the contract for disposal of infectious <br /> waste services) . <br /> 85 <br />
