R <br /> Section: General Policy Guidelines <br /> Infection Control <br /> Title: BIOHAZARDOUS WASTE PLAN Effective Date: <br /> Revision: <br /> Reviewed/No <br /> Changes <br /> POLICY <br /> All biohazardous waste will be handled following current State regulations. <br /> PURPOSE: <br /> To prevent transmission of disease to residents or staff from potentially biohazardous waste. <br /> DEFINITIONS <br /> Biohazardous waste means any of the following: <br /> 1. Laboratory waste, including human specimen cultures from medical laboratories. <br /> 2. Waste containing any microbiological specimens sent to a laboratory for analysis. <br /> 3. Waste, which contains recognizable fluid blood, fluid blood products, containers, or <br /> equipment containing blood that is fluid. <br /> 4. Items that are heavily contaminated with blood or other potentially infectious materials <br /> and are capable of releasing these materials during handling. <br /> Biohazardous waste does not include disposable diapers, band-aids, wound dressings, used <br /> gloves and gowns and isolation waste unless it meets the above definitions.QCP� AAde 1-1�»vti <br /> REFERENCE <br /> "Exposure to Blood, What Health Care Workers Need to Know", Center for Disease Control <br /> PROCEDURE <br /> CONTAINMENT AND STORAGE: <br /> 1. BIOHAZARDOUS WASTE shall be contained in a red biohazard bag conspicuously <br /> labeled with the words "Biohazardous Waste" or with the international biohazard symbol <br /> and the word 'BIOHAZARD". <br /> 2. SHARPS WASTE shall be placed in an approved sharps container. When a sharps <br /> container is 3/4 full, it shall be discarded in the biological container. The containers ready <br /> for disposal shall have a tightly fitted lid to preclude loss of contents. The sharps <br /> container must be labeled with the international biohazard symbol and the word <br /> "BIOHAZARD". <br /> 3. BLOOD AND BODY PRODUCTS.
