Wine Country Care Center <br />Medical Waste Policy and Procedure <br />Policy: <br />This facility operates with an environmental permit to maintain bio hazard waste. <br />Contaminated needles and syringes are considered bio hazard waste and are handled in <br />the same manner; however they are stored in a puncture proof container. This waste is <br />locked in a separate area at all times, unless being transported by authorized personnel. <br />The designated accumulation area provides a manor and location which affords <br />protection from animals, rain, and wind and does not provide a breeding place or a food <br />source for insects or rodents. The bio hazard waste is bagged in a red bio hazard bag. The <br />waste is placed in containers labeled in the same manner. The waste is removed from this <br />facility every 7 days. The total amount of waste is less than 100 kilograms. <br />Procedure: <br />1. Licensed staff place bio hazardous waste in a red bio hazard bag <br />2. Tie the red bio hazard bag to prevent leakage or expulsion of content <br />3. Open bio hazardous waste door—place waste in covered trash can <br />4. Lock door <br />5. Housekeeping removes bio hazard waste when container full or every 7 days. <br />a. Remove container supplied by Steri Cycle <br />b. Replace container in room <br />c. Transport biohazard waste to outside designated accumulation area <br />d. Lock door <br />e. Housekeeping open every 7 days for steri-cycle <br />6. Any leak or spill of a medical waste shall be decontaminated by quaternary <br />ammonium solution (400ppm active agent) <br />7. Bio hazardous waste comprised of pharmaceuticals shall be segregated for storage <br />and when placed in container that is labeled incineration only <br />
