Wine Country Care Center
Medical Waste Policy and Procedure
Policy:
This facility operates with an environmental permit to maintain bio hazard waste.
Contaminated needles and syringes are considered bio hazard waste and are handled in
the same manner; however they are stored in a puncture proof container. This waste is
locked in a separate area at all times, unless being transported by authorized personnel.
The designated accumulation area provides a manor and location which affords
protection from animals, rain, and wind and does not provide a breeding place or a food
source for insects or rodents. The bio hazard waste is bagged in a red bio hazard bag. The
waste is placed in containers labeled in the same manner. The waste is removed from this
facility every 7 days. The total amount of waste is less than 100 kilograms.
Procedure:
1. Licensed staff place bio hazardous waste in a red bio hazard bag
2. Tie the red bio hazard bag to prevent leakage or expulsion of content
3. Open bio hazardous waste door—place waste in covered trash can
4. Lock door
5. Housekeeping removes bio hazard waste when container full or every 7 days.
a. Remove container supplied by Steri Cycle
b. Replace container in room
c. Transport biohazard waste to outside designated accumulation area
d. Lock door
e. Housekeeping open every 7 days for steri-cycle
6. Any leak or spill of a medical waste shall be decontaminated by quaternary
ammonium solution (400ppm active agent)
7. Bio hazardous waste comprised of pharmaceuticals shall be segregated for storage
and when placed in container that is labeled incineration only
