lnfectidn Prevention &Control Program <br /> • Discarded waste from specimens sent to the laboratory. <br /> • Waste materials contaminated with excretion,exudate,or secretions from humans <br /> who are isolated by the infection control staff or attending physician. <br /> Medical Waste-Ali of the following: <br /> • Biobazardous waste or sharps waste., <br /> • Waste generated or produced,as a result of the diagnosis,treatment,or <br /> immunization of human beings or animals.Medical waste may be infectious. <br /> Sharps Waste-Any device having acute rigid comers or edges,or projections capable <br /> of cutting or piercing,including: <br /> • Hypodermic needles,syringes,blades and needles,lancets <br /> • Brokenglass items,pipettes and vials contaminated with other medical waste, <br /> 3. Containment And Storage Of Medic2ll Waste <br /> A. To containerize or store medical.waste,employees shall do the following: <br /> * Medical waste shall be contained separately,from other waste at the point <br /> of origin. <br /> * Biohazardous waste shall be coritained in a red biohazard bag <br /> conspicuously labeled with the w6rds"BioliazardousWaste"or with the <br /> international b1ohazard syrr►bol and the,word ".8johazard", <br /> * Sharps containers must be rigid-,puncture and leak resistant when sealed, <br /> cannot be reopened without great difficulty,and properly labeled. Sharps <br /> containers may be placed in.the red biohazard bags. <br /> a All baWd medical waste shaU not be removed from the bags. <br /> 0 All red biohazard bags shall be identified with the name of the college. <br /> B. To containerizebi0hIZIrdGMS Waste in a bichazard bag,employees shall do <br /> the following: <br /> o The bags shall be tied to prevent leakage or expulsion of contents during <br /> all future storage, handling,or transport. <br /> o Bioh=rdous red bags must be placed for storage,handling,or transport <br /> in a rigid or disposable container. The containers must be: <br /> a. Leak resistant andfitted with tight covers. <br /> 1). Sanitary and in good repair. <br /> c. Can be any color. <br /> d.
