FiVESTA R Policy Number: CL-IP-3048 <br /> QUALI'rY CARE, INC, <br /> Policy Date: 1/1/01 <br /> BIOHAZARD LABELING Policy Sponsor: Clinical/Infection Prevention <br /> 1.0 PURPOSE <br /> Containers and areas used for storage, transport, and shipping of blood or other potentially <br /> infectious materials at the facility are designated as such by attaching the universal biohazard <br /> symbol. <br /> 2.0 FUNDAMENTAL INFORMATION <br /> Required biohazard labeling includes the following legend: <br /> These labels are colored fluorescent orange, orange-red or predominately so, with lettering or <br /> symbols in a contrasting color. <br /> 3.0 PROCEDURE <br /> 1. Biohazard warning labels are affixed to containers of regulated waste, refrigerators and <br /> freezers containing blood or other potentially infectious material(OPIM). <br /> 2. Biohazard warning labels are affixed to the door leading to the - regulated waste <br /> container storage area. <br /> 3. Red bags or red containers may be substituted for labels. <br /> 4. Biohazard labeling is not required when: <br /> a. Red bags or red containers are substituted for labels <br /> b. For containers of blood, blood components, or blood products that are labeled as <br /> to their contents and have been released for transfusion or other clinical use, <br /> c. For individual containers of blood or other potentially infectious <br /> d. Materials that are placed in a labeled container during storage, transport, <br /> shipment, or disposal. <br /> e. Regulated waste that has been decontaminated does not require labeling or color- <br /> coding. <br /> 5.
